Charity stripe trips up Comet girls

The Underwood Comets have to hone in on the hoop from the free throw line before they head into the Region 5 Basketball Tournament at Mandan – and they’ve got until Monday to do it.

The Comets struggled to cash in at the free throw line during the recent District 10 tournament in Turtle Lake – one night it didn’t matter so much, another it did.

Friday night, when the Comets made just four of 13 from the charity stripe, it didn’t matter so much, as they were able to pull out a 36-33 win.

Saturday night, in the title match-up, it mattered more, as the Comets netted just five of 17 free throws in their 37-29 loss to champion Wilton-Wing.

It might have been the difference in the title game, noted Underwood Coach Toni Cottingham. Although, she added, Wilton-Wing made some smart changes to its game plan.

"I think their change-up just did enough to make us think a little more than we needed to," said Cottingham. "We definitely got the shots we were looking for."
