Comet girls claim third at county tourney

By Mary Hefta, BHG News Service

The Underwood Comets girls basketball redeemed themselves Saturday night in the third place match-up with the Wilton-Wing Miners in the final night of the McLean County Tournament hosted by Turtle Lake last weekend.  After an overtime victory in the first round against the Garrison Troopers and a frustrating night in the semi finals against the Washburn Cardinals, the Comets were ready to play basketball. Head coach Toni Cottingham gave kudos to her team’s performance. “I was pleased with the focus and energy we came out with,” Cottingham said. “We moved the ball around, attacked gaps and were able to hit some shots. Defensively I thought we did a good job putting pressure on their shooters and keeping them out of a rhythm.” The 17-year head coach was happy with her team’s shooting percentage.  The Comets were 18/38  which is 48 percent from two-point range. “This is our best of the year!” She praised. The Comets committed 18 turnovers while Wilton had 33.
