Comets 17-1 and rising

By Brenda L. Shelkey

The Comet girls garnered another three wins against New Salem 46-40, New Town 49-40 and Powers Lake 60-37 in the last week, ending their regular season 17-1. The Comets were supposed to finish the regular season and have senior night on Monday with Surrey, but the game was cancelled due to the weather. Head Coach Toni Cottingham’s girls met several challenges during the week. Against New Salem, Cottingham said, "We played without junior Crystal Dammen who was sidelined with the flu. It was a good opportunity for us to come out and play with some different offensive and defensive rotations. "New Salem is always a strong regional opponent and I was pleased with the way the girls played. Despite a lower than average shooting percentage and a number of unforced turnovers, the girls were able to keep their composure and continue to play solid ball." High scorers for the New Salem game were Lexi Longtin with 14 points and Hunter Wilson with 12. Longtin had eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Wilson had three rebounds and two steals. Kayla Horst added eight points, six assists, and five steals. Samantha Krueger had six points and nine rebounds. Natalie Eslinger added four points. Alix Auck made two points and had seven rebounds, and four blocks.
