Comets beat Troopers in consolation

By Mary Hefta, Sports Writer

In the third game of the McLean County Tournament, the Underwood Comets girls basketball team was looking to win the consolation championship and they took the Garrison Troopers as their prisoners from the opening seconds of the game. Senior leadership showed in the first quarter in the form of assists, steals, and three pointers. Seniors Crystal Dammen, Natalie Eslinger, Megan Mormon and Hunter Wilson all contributed to a stellar first quarter for the Comets. Juniors Alix Auck, Miranda Pochant did their part as well to lead the Troopers at the end of the first quarter 15-3. Dammen opened the second quarter with a three pointer from the top of the key and the Comets were off and rolling in the next eight minutes of basketball. Mormon hit a nice short shot off the glass in the next few seconds. Dammen drove into the lane nicely several times and the Comets kept control of the game during the second quarter, as well. Eslinger added a five-foot jumper while Auck took a 10-footer to the hoop. Eslinger ended the half with a layup at the buzzer to bring the Comet lead to 19. Mormon added five quick points for the Comets at the beginning of the third quarter of play and the lead was 38-18 midway through the third quarter. Pochant added a bucket while Dammen added points from free throws and a shot from an offensive rebound to end the third quarter and the Comets held on to their 18 point lead.
