Comets hosting Holsteins Thursday

The Underwood Comets were set to take on district foe Wilton Tuesday night, and they felt ready, said Underwood Head Coach Mary Hefta. The Comets had a good weekend of quality game with a lot of players getting some quality playing time and lots of touches – so they were ready to take on Wilton as well as New Salem, who are traveling to Underwood today (Thursday).

This past week’s action saw the Comets take third place in the Silver Division of the Center Invitational, falling in their final to Mott-Regent.

What Hefta was more focused on, though, was that the Comets were able to split with eventual tournament Gold Division champion Heart River during pool play.

Earlier action last week saw the Comets fall to a visiting Glenburn team by the score of 3-0, so putting that loss behind them when they headed into the tournament was key.

"I’m very, very proud of how we played over the weekend," said Hefta. "Everybody got some good play time and a lot of touches."

With senior hitter Erin Dammann out of the lineup to nurse an ankle injury (she is anticipated to be back this week), freshman Maria Wirtz stepped in for quite a bit of the action, earning praise from Hefta. She finished the tournament with six blocks.
