Comets in 3-way tie for first

By Suzanne Werre, BHG News Service

The Comets’ 3-1 win over Turtle Lake-Mercer Monday night set the stage for a three-way tie in district standings between Underwood, Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky and Wilton just as the teams look forward to the district tournament, which starts Oct. 29. As of deadline, the top seed of the tournament had not yet been determined by the pre-set formula. The Comets won a key district match Monday night, knocking off the visiting Trojans of TLMM 3-1 to stay in the hunt for the number one seed in the upcoming tournament. Comet coach Mary Hefta credited the team’s serving for a large part of the win. “The girls played so well,” said Hefta. “ We needed to improve our serving in order to get in the win column again and the Comets did just that.” The Comets served 95 times and had only eight errors for 93 percent, a huge improvement over the last few matches, noted Hefta.
