Comets settle for third

The Underwood Comets started the New Salem Invitational on a high note Tuesday, dropping Flasher 58-36. Then they ran into potentially the region’s top team in round two, and a lid over the bucket in the battle for third place.
The Comets settled for fourth place in the tournament after falling to Grant county 57-35 in the semis and 41-26 against Glen Ullin-Hebron Saturday night in the third and fourth-place game.
“We’ve been playing well defensively,” commented Underwood Coach Jared Kautzman. “It’s not always going to show up in the score when you play hard defensively, but I think we’ve done that every game.”
In Saturday’s final game for the Comets, it wasn’t their defense that let them down, it was their shooting, as the Lady Comets struggled to put the ball through the hole. The girls in purple and white were good for about 20 percent of their shots from the field.
“That’s definitely not going to get it done,” said Kautzman. “We missed lay-ups, we missed free throws – nobody would get anything going.”
The lid was practically glued onto the bucket the first and final stanzas, as the Comets scored a combined six points in those quarters. The Comets were blanked in double-digits for the game, with senior Mackenzie Snyder topping the scoring with eight points.
