The Comets captured the third-place trophy at the New Salem Invitational this past Saturday after the tournament game times were eventually shuffled around enough to actually get to play.
The Comets won their final game of the tournament Saturday, annihilating Flasher through the first quarter, cruising to a 22-0 first-stanza lead. The Comets would go on to win by the score of 57-23, led by Mackenzie and Taysha Snyder’s 15 and 12 points, respectively.
“We had a lot of fast-break points,” commented Underwood Coach Jared Kautzman. “Mackenzie was the beneficiary of a lot of those fast-break points because she was up on top on defense.”
The tournament was supposed to start last Monday, but because of storm conditions, the tournament didn’t get underway until Thursday night.
The Comets found themselves playing for third place after a Friday night loss to Kidder County, watching a six-point half-time lead fritter away, turning into a 41-34 loss.
Grace Benz led Kidder County in scoring, while McKenna Wilson paced the Comets with 15 points, all of them coming from behind the three-point arc. Mackenzie Snyder was also in double digits with 12 points.
