Comets split in VB action

By Suzanne Werre, BHG News Service

The Comet netters fell to a scrappy Wilton team this past Thursday night 3-2 in Underwood after taking a convincing 2-0 lead, as the Miner girls picked up their intensity a notch while the Comets found themselves faltering. All five games of the match were lopsided in scoring, with Underwood winning 25-16 and 25-19 before Wilton rallied to win the next three games 25-18, 25-17 and 15-9. “Wilton-Wing is always a tough team to gauge because they may start out slow, but they have some hard hitters and they like to tip and push the ball,” commented Underwood coach Mary Hefta. “We came out so strong winning games one and two, but volleyball is such a game of momentum and we just couldn’t get the momentum back.” Junior hitter Abby Landenberger paced the Comets offensively with 14 kills, and she added six aces to go along with them. Also adding some offensive punch was Erin Dammann who had seven kills, while Caitlyn Berg added six. Getting the offense going were Sam Cottingham and Taylor Dammann with five and four assists, respectively, while back row specialist/libero Kenzie Bertsch got things going with 21 digs, while Landenberger had 10 and Brianne Halstead eight.
