Comets split with Troop, Eagles

By Suzanne Werre, BHG News Service

The Comet spikers went into this week’s District 10 volleyball tournament as the top seed, but had a pair of regular season matches to take care of before hitting the court Tuesday in Garrison. The Comets saw both sides of the coin in their last regular-season action, easily handling Garrison 3-0 last Thursday in Underwood before traveling to New Town, where the Eagles handed the Comets a 3-0 loss. “We came out flat and just couldn’t get out of the funk,” commented Comet coach Mary Hefta. “We missed too many serves and our passes just weren’t there.” The Comets and Eagles battled to a 26-24 score the first set, then the Eagles took a hold of the match with 25-16 and 25-17 wins. Junior Abby Landenberger paced the Comets in point-scoring with 12 kills, in addition to tallying 16 digs and three aces. Kenzie Bertsch led the way in the back row with 21 digs, while Brianne Halstead added 10. Sammi Cottingham and Taylor Dammann got the offense started, counting 14 and 12 assists, respectively.
