Comets win openers, advancing to regional tourney

By Suzanne Werre, BHG News Service

Monday night’s storm put the kibosh on the Underwood Comets’ hopes of taking home the title of the District 10 girls basketball tournament – they would have to wait until Tuesday to have that opportunity, but if the opening rounds last Thursday and Saturday  were any indication, the Comet girls were ready to take on the district’s top seed, Turtle Lake-Mercer. The Comets blew past their first two opponents, Center-Stanton and Washburn by 21 and 25 points, respectively, on their way to the title game while TL-M had its hands full in the semifinal round, pulling out a 54-50 win over Wilton-Wing. Regardless of the championship game’s outcome, the Comets earned themselves a spot at the Region 5 tournament, which gets underway Monday in Mandan. In Saturday’s 44-23 win over Washburn, the Comets held Washburn’s big gun Kennedy Retterath to just 11 points as they took control of the game early in the second half.  The Comets outscored Washburn 25-9 the second half to advance to the title game. Sophomore guard Erin Dammann paced the Comets on the scoreboard with 11 points, but the Comets forged a pretty balanced offensive, as forwards Emma Lee and Charley Auck added nine and eight points, respectively, and guard Abby Landenberger tossed in seven.
