Comets wrap up season

Coaches have a goal that they’ll peak at tournament time. Underwood Comets boys coach Steve Cottingham saw his team reach its goal this past Friday when the Comets took on Center-Stanton in loser-out action of the District 10 basketball tournament. The Comets trailed by just two points at half-time, after having lost starting guard Parker Heger to injury late in the first quarter. But they struggled to find the hole the second half as Center-Stanton rolled to the 53-34 win, advancing to the regional play-in game.

Despite the loss, Cottingham was pleased with what he saw from his team Friday.

"It was probably the best four quarters we’ve played this year," he said.

"It was a nice way to end the year," he continued. Yes, the team lost, but there were plenty of moments during the game when things were going the Comets’ way. And things looked a lot better than they had just a week ago when they took on Center-Stanton in Center.

"I was happy, and I think the kids were happy with the way we played," he said.
