Cougar girls running for state spot

In between snowflakes, torrential rains and 40-mile-an-hour winds, the Central McLean Cougars were able to get in a couple track meets this past week as they look toward qualifying meets before the upcoming state meet May 22 and 23 at the Bismarck Community Bowl.

The athletes’ last chance to qualify will be this Saturday when they compete in the South Central Regional Meet, also at the Community Bowl, in Bismarck.

There were no new state qualifiers this week, but some of the athletes did improve on their season best, which is good as they get closer to regionals and state.

If recent results give an indicator, the Cougar girls’ relay teams have pretty good shots at qualifying for state, if not by time, by finishing in the top three at the regional meet.

Saturday in Fessenden, the mile (1600 meters) relay team made up of Mackenzie Snyder, Maggie Eng, Emily Eichhorst and Madison Holm dropped seven seconds off of its season-best time, capturing first place at the meet with a time of 4:27.44. The state-qualifying mark is 4:16.24.

Although dropping almost 11 seconds off of their time to qualify by time could be tough, Cougar coach Lee Weisgarber says his young group of runners is looking pretty strong – and a warm day could only help.
