Cougars haunt the Black Devils

By Mary Hefta

As chilly wet weather made its way back to western North Dakota, the Central McLean Cougars hosted the Hettinger Black Devils in Region 6 nine-man football action in Underwood last Friday night. The senior football players, cheerleaders, stats and their parents were recognized before the game. After the seniors and their parents were thanked for their dedication and commitment to the Central McLean football program, the Black Devils of Hettinger kicked off to the Cougars. The Cougars scored their first touchdown of the night at the 8:45 point of the first quarter when senior back Sam Hultberg rushed 33 yards to the right side to go up 6-0. Junior back Grant Singer dashed into the end zone for the two-point conversion and the Cougars led 8-0. Hettinger answered with a touchdown of their own just minutes later when the Black Devil quarterback appeared to be sacked but was able to rush out of the pocket and get a pass-off to one of his receivers. Hettinger completed the 68-yard touchdown pass but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful. The Cougars held onto the lead 8-6 with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.
