Cougars remain unbeaten
The Central McLean Cougars continued their unbeaten start to the volleyball season last week, earning a pair of straight-set victories and improving to 7-0 overall.
Central McLean opened the week on the road Tuesday, Sept. 1, traveling to Surrey and returning home with a 3-0 victory. The Cougars followed that performance with another sweep Thursday, Sept. 3, defeating Velva 3-0 in their home gym.
Although the final score against Velva showed a sweep, Central McLean head coach Whitney Jangula said the Cougars had to work for the victory against a determined opponent.
“Velva was a solid team that played scrappy defense and had strong hitters and blockers at the net,” Jangula said. “They really made us fight for every ball and were a great reminder that every point matters.”
Velva put Central McLean in difficult situations during portions of the match, but the Cougars responded each time. Rather than allowing early deficits to disrupt their play, Central McLean remained aggressive and found ways to regain control.
“We found ourselves behind a few times, and the girls did a great job of rallying together, staying composed, and continuing to stay on the attack,” Jangula said. “Those are the types of situations that will help us grow as a team.”
The two victories added to an impressive opening stretch for Central McLean. Through its first seven contests, the team has yet to suffer a loss and has quickly established itself as one of the area’s strongest squads.
