Cougars softball aims for growth behind experienced core

The Central McLean Cougars softball team enters the 2026 season with a mix of veteran leadership and developing youth, a balance Head Coach Jody Fylling hopes will translate into steady improvement throughout the spring.
With several returning starters anchoring the lineup, the Cougars will lean on experience early while working to bring younger players along as the season progresses.
That approach, Fylling said, will be key to positioning the team for success when postseason play arrives.
“We have a solid core coming back,” Fylling said. “From there, we will have to get some kids to step up and fill some needs. We will work on getting everyone up to speed and some experience during the regular season so that we can be competitive come regional tournament time.”
At the center of that returning group is senior Sally Heger, who provides versatility behind the plate and at third base.
Heger’s leadership and experience will be critical in guiding a roster that features multiple underclassmen stepping into larger roles.
Fellow senior Brooklyn Tomlinson is expected to patrol center field, bringing range and athleticism to the Cougars’ defense, while Harpyr Abrahamson and Haley Bobbins add senior presence in the outfield.
Together, the group gives Central McLean a steady defensive foundation and veteran voices throughout the lineup.
Junior Zella Anderson will play a key role as both a second baseman and pitcher, offering flexibility in the field and depth in the circle.
Anderson is joined by freshman River Fylling, who is expected to contribute at shortstop and as a pitcher, adding another arm to the Cougars’ pitching rotation.
