Cougars stay perfect with wins over Wilton-Wing and Mandaree
The Central McLean Cougars boys basketball team continued its unbeaten run last week, earning a pair of victories to remain perfect in Division B play and improve to 15-0 overall and 5-0 in District 8.
Central McLean opened the week with a hard fought 65-56 win over Wilton-Wing on Jan. 27, in a matchup featuring two of the top teams in Region 4.
The contest lived up to expectations, with both teams trading runs and battling for control throughout the night.
Head coach Joi Anderson knew Wilton-Wing would be a tough opponent and emphasized defense as the key to success.
“We knew Wilton would be a battle,” Anderson said. “I knew we had to control their 3-point shooting, and we put a lot of pressure on Teigan Earsley.”
The Cougars focused on contesting shots and closing out on shooters, forcing Wilton-Wing to work deep into possessions.
While Central McLean did not shoot the ball as well as it would have liked, the Cougars made up for it with defensive intensity and effort.
“We played a great defensive game which helped make up for a not-so-great shooting night for us,” Anderson said.
Aiden Hanson led Central McLean with 24 points, consistently attacking the basket and creating opportunities for himself and his teammates.
Ethan Hanson and Bridger Rittenbach each scored 10 points, providing steady offensive support.
Ty Makeeff added eight points, while Jonas Christensen chipped in seven points to round out the scoring.
The Cougars began to create separation in the second half by turning defensive stops into transition opportunities and limiting Wilton-Wing’s second chance looks.
Down the stretch, Central McLean remained composed at the free throw line and executed offensively to secure the nine point victory.
