Cougars survive District 8 Tournament
ars put together a determined postseason run at the 2025 Division B, District 8 Volleyball Tournament in Underwood, playing with the consistency and composure that have become hallmarks of Coach Whitney Jangula’s squad.
Though the Cougars fell just short of a district-title appearance, they rebounded quickly to earn a Region 4 berth and close another successful chapter in program history.
As the No. 2 seed, Central McLean entered the quarterfinal round on Thursday, October 30, well-rested and ready to go.
The Cougars opened their tournament against No. 7 Center-Stanton and made quick work of the Wildcats, winning in straight sets 25-9, 25-12, 25-12.
The victory reflected the same balance and energy that have driven their strong fall campaign.
That win advanced the Cougars to Friday’s semifinal against No. 3 New Salem-Almont, a match that turned into one of the tournament’s most competitive battles.
Central McLean came out firing, taking the first two sets 25-13 and 25-14 behind clean passing and strong front-row play.
But New Salem-Almont responded with poise, clawing back to take the next three sets 25-22, 25-19 and 18-16, ending the match in a five-set thriller.
The loss was a heartbreaker for the Cougars, who came within a few points of the district final.
Coach Whitney Jangula said that while the result was disappointing, she was proud of how her players handled the challenge.
“During tournament play, the girls continued to compete with heart and determination,” Jangula said.
“In our matchup against New Salem, we faced some mental lapses that were tough to overcome mid-game. However, following that loss, the girls came back to practice with focus and drive. Their ability to bounce back and persevere really impressed me. This group plays so well together and never gives up on each other, and that team-first attitude is something special.”
The Cougars’ response to that semifinal loss was immediate.
In the Region 4 qualifying match on Monday, November 3, Central McLean faced No. 5 Garrison with a spot at regionals on the line.
The Cougars were locked in from the first serve, sweeping the Troopers 25-11, 25-8 and 25-12.
The win secured the program’s return to the Region 4 Tournament and reaffirmed the steady progress Jangula has seen all season.
