County tourney finals nixed

By STU MERRY, BHG News Service

A new champion was crowned this past weekend at the McLean County Tournament in Garrison. The title-holder is a first-time champ. Coming away with bragging rights is winter. Clad in home whites throughout the tourney, winter stormed through the competition with relative ease. The tournament opened this past Thursday with a full slate of four games. Day-one action saw the Bismarck JV have their way with Max, rolling 97-36. Center-Stanton held off the Washburn Cardinals 66-42, the difference being the rebounding differential where the Wildcats gathered in 41 total rebounds to the Cardinals’ 24. Turtle Lake-Mercer began its charge to the title game, cruising past Underwood 77-39. Malzer threw in 22. Trevor Thomas added 11 and Grant Singer 10 to pace the state-ranked Trojans. Ben Duben led the Comets with 13. In the nightcap, the host Troopers fell to the Minot JV 53-34.
