Day-man,’ Auck pace Comet girls in opener

One could say the Underwood Comets dominated in their first outing on the hard court Monday night. But it may be more appropriate to say they day-minated the Solen Sioux, as junior guard Erin Dammann (pronounced Dayman) tossed in 13 points on the way to a 64-19 win. (This is primarily a way to remind readers that girls hoops players Erin and Taylor’s last name is pronounced Day-man, while boys hoopster Nick Dammen’s last name is pronounced Dah-man.)

Dammann was joined in double digits in the drubbing by center Charley Auck, who also tossed in 13 points, while senior guard Abby Landenberger tossed in 12 points.

The Comets used their pressure defense and massive wingspans to stymie the Sioux, then used their strength inside to capitalize on turnovers and put the ball through the hole, scoring the majority of their points from within about 10 feet or so, estimated Comet head coach Toni Cottingham.
