The veteran-loaded Williams County Firestorm team used its experience to its advantage last Saturday night, outlasting a young Central McLean team on the gridiron by the score of 41-0 in Underwood.
The Cougars, with just two seniors on the roster, played nose-to-nose with the Firestorm for the first full quarter, taking a 0-0 tie score into the second stanza. The second stanza, however, the Cougars’ youth started showing as the veterans of the Firestorm started to wear down the rookie Cougar defense.
The Firestorm scored three unanswered touchdowns the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead into the half, including a pair of short TD runs from quarterback Ryan Nielsen and a 10-yd TD pass for the score from Nielsen to Tanner Reinholdt. The Firestorm would score three more unanswered touchdowns the second half, including an interception run back 25 yards for a score.
“We’re playing so many young guys; they just got worn down,” said Cougar co-coach Kevin Dockter. “And we started making some mistakes and weren’t tackling well.
