Girls finish fourth in Region

By Mary Hefta, Sports Writer

After losing a heartbreaking game in the Region 5 semi-final game against the Turtle Lake-Mercer Trojans, the Comet girls were hoping to end their season with a win. The Comets met the New Salem Holsteins in the third place game in Mandan last Thursday night. The first quarter was a battle of turnovers and ended in a low scoring 7-7 tie. In the second quarter neither team was able to drop a bucket until the 5:47 mark when junior Miranda Pochant capitalized for two on a nice assist from senior Crystal Dammen. Senior Natalie Eslinger took another pass from Dammen, hit the basket and was fouled, earning three points the old fashioned way. The Comets led 12-7 with just under four minutes remaining in the half. The Lady Holsteins were able to tie the game at 14 with 1:22 left. New Salem hit a buzzer-beater for two and the girls went into the locker room down 14-18 at the half.
