Hefta is happy ‘flying under the radar’

Underwood volleyball coach Mary Hefta likes how her team is playing these days. The wins are coming often enough against tough teams that the Comets know they’ve got some skills. If they happen to drop a game here or there, Hefta isn’t sweating it. The first half of the season and the early tournaments are tools to see what the team can do, see what she’s got to work with. She doesn’t want the team to peak quite yet – not until regionals.
Even with Monday night’s 3-0 sweep over the Washburn Cardinals, Hefta is waiting for the best to come.
"The new season is starting," said Hefta. The team just finished the Shiloh Invitational this past weekend, where the Comets lost one match in pool play, and it was enough to keep them from advancing to the tournament part of the day. They also notched a 3-1 win over a strong Sawyer team last Tuesday, a nondistrict match, as well as Monday night’s win over the Cardinals.
"We didn’t want to peak at the tournament, at the fifth match into the season," continued Hefta. "We’ll keep getting better and better, and if we fly under the radar, that’s just fine."
