Injuries can’t stop the Comet heart

By Mary Hefta, Sports writer

When the Comet girls’ basketball team headed northwest to New Town on Monday night they had two varsity players on crutches. There were three games scheduled and head coach Toni Cottingham and her assistant coach Steve Cottingham had to do some fancy figuring to keep track of quarters for their players. The Comet varsity came out shooting and senior Crystal Dammen dropped in 16 points in the first half. A quick New Town team kept pressing and the Comets were able to break that press in a very fast-paced first half. The Comets dominated in the first half with a 35-24 lead. At the beginning of the third quarter the Comets went through a dry spell and didn’t score until the 4:46 point in the third, but not before Dammen went down with an ankle sprain and had to leave the game. Junior Alix Auck dropped in the first basket of the second half with a tipped in ball and it was 37-30.
