Keeping sights on the long-term

Keeping their eye on the prize that may be down the road just a bit is the goal for the Comets boys hoops team, as second-year head coach Steve Cottingham focuses on the small victories each game – the better ball handling, the up-tick in the defense, the plays that were run completely, rather than the final score of the game.
The Comets were handed a 66-22 loss at home Friday night by the Washburn Cardinals, but Cottingham had a pretty easy time talking about the good things he saw from his team that night.
"Defensively, we’ve been harping on us just being able to compete and challenge people, and I thought of the five games we’ve played, the first half in particular, was the best job we’ve done, having five people on the floor hustling after it, getting after things," said Cottingham.
With a starting lineup that’s made up primarily of freshmen and sophomores, with not a single senior, the youth of the Comet team is going to play a factor in a lot of games as they take on more experienced teams, like Washburn.
The Comets found themselves running into tough territory against Washburn’s defense when they tried to the move the ball into the paint.
