Lady Comets win final home games

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

With the girls’ basketball regular season on its final stretch, Underwood had one final home stand left for them. The Comets faced off against the New Salem Holsteins to start the week and then the Velva Aggies at the end of it. If it wasn’t enough just to win the last two home games of the year, the Comets put on a show for their crowd and battled to the victory in thrilling fashion, taking down New Salem in a rare double-overtime game 54-48 and toppling Velva in a close game 49-44. The game against New Salem was close the entire time as the teams constantly traded the lead between them. In the second quarter, Comet Senior Megan Morman found Alix Auck on a nifty pass into the post and then came back down the court on the next possession and scored a basket for herself to tie the game. Alix Auck and Crystal Dammen supplied most of the offense for the Comets as they found themselves up 40-32 with about a minute left in the game. Some clutch shooting by the Holsteins combined with some missed free throws on the Underwood side ended regulation in a 40-40 tie.
