Late-Inning rally falls short as Cougars drop road contest to Surrey
The Central McLean Cougars baseball team mounted a late rally but couldn’t overcome an early deficit, falling 9-4 to the Surrey Mustangs on Monday.
Surrey jumped out to a fast start, scoring in four of the first five innings to build a commanding 9-0 lead.
The Mustangs were led by their center fielder who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two walks, and three runs scored.
Surrey tallied 13 hits and drew 12 walks as the Cougars pitching staff struggled to find the zone.
Braxten Wanner started on the mound for Central McLean, giving up six earned runs on eight hits in just under three innings of work.
Mason Skachenko and Jase Utley combined to finish the game, with Utley delivering a strong final two innings by retiring all nine batters he faced.
Despite the early struggles, the Cougars showed resilience.
In the sixth inning, Central McLean got on the board when Brody Vaagene drove in two runs with a base-loaded single.
The seventh inning saw another push, as the Cougars plated two more runs thanks to hits by Ethan Hanson, Mason Skachenko, and Bjorn Anderson.
