Opponents no match for Comet spikers

By Suzanne Werre, BHG News Service

The Comets picked up a pair of key district wins this past week, easily topping Washburn 3-1 last Monday then following up with a 3-0 drubbing of Garrison Tuesday.  Early this week, the Comet hitters again had to work a little harder for the win, going five games before defeating Drake-Anamoose 3-2 in Underwood.  The Comets travel to Center this Thursday for more Class B volleyball action, the first of three road matches in a row. Comet coach Mary Hefta had been anticipating a close match with Drake-Anamoose, recalling that last season the two teams went five games – and they did it again. Junior Abby Landenberger, senior Caitlyn Berg and junior Hefta provided the one-two-three punch Monday night, combining for 22 kills as the Comets rallied in game five to win the match with a 15-9 final win. Landenberger was also good for 22 digs, while senior libero Kenzie Bertsch led the back row with 29 digs and junior Brianne Halstead 19. Sammi Cottingham tallied 18 sets while Taylor Dammann was good for 10. “We had a few moments where we weren’t communicating and that is when we tend to make our mental errors,” said Hefta. “We are a very successful team when we chatter. “ Hefta said the win over Drake was not just a win, but also a moral victory, having come back from a 12-24 deficit to lose by just two points, 25-27, in game four.
