It took the whole first half for the Comet girls to get their mojo working together, as the Underwood team turned a one-point half-time lead to an 11-point victory Tuesday night.
The Comets were hosting District 10 opponent Washburn in the Comets’ first district match-up of the year which saw Underwood limit the Cardinals to just five third-quarter points as they notched a 55-44 win on the hard court.
“We took a 10-point lead about three minutes into the second half,” noted Underwood Coach Jared Kautzman. We came out and played right away to start the second half.”
The next quarter or so, the Cardinals would rally and gain a few points, then the Comets would answer, always keeping the lead to about 8 to 12 points before taking the win.
Kautzman credited the defensive work of senior Maria Wirtz for curtailing Washburn’s scoring in the paint.
“They’ve got a tough inside game. I asked a lot of Maria, and she played really well on defense,” Kautzman said.
