Tomlinson powers Cougars past Rugby in shutout win
The Central McLean Cougars softball team turned in an impressive all-around performance Tuesday, using a breakout offensive showing and dominant pitching to roll past Rugby Panthers by a 14-0 final on the road.
Central McLean steadily built momentum early before erupting for big innings in the middle of the game, putting the contest out of reach and showcasing the kind of balanced effort that can build confidence as the schedule begins to pick up.
After a scoreless opening inning, the Cougars scratched across the first run of the afternoon in the second to grab an early lead.
That advantage quickly ballooned in the third, when Central McLean broke the game wide open with a six-run frame.
The Cougars were not finished there.
Two more runs crossed in the fourth before Central McLean delivered another offensive surge in the fifth, plating five runs to cap off a commanding 14-run shutout victory.
At the center of the offensive explosion was Brooklyn Tomlinson, who delivered one of the most dominant individual performances of the season.
Tomlinson was unstoppable at the plate, finishing a perfect 5-for-5 while driving in five runs. Time after time, she came through with big hits, helping spark rallies and keeping constant pressure on Rugby’s defense.
Head coach Jodi Fylling praised Tomlinson’s steady approach and ability to rise to the moment.
“Brooklynn is always a consistent hitter and stepped up with so many teammates gone,” Fylling said. “She’s a threat at the plate as she can go left or right.”
