The Comets brought home the consolation championship from the Velva Invitational Saturday night, bouncing back from a first-round loss to handle Glenburn by the score of 53-36 in the semis, and South Prairie 50-44 in the fifth-place game.
First round action saw the Comets fall to Nedrose by the score of 41-37; Kayden Hornberger was the lone Comet to break into double digits, scoring 27 points in the loss. As a team, Underwood made good on just 22 percent from the field.
Hornberger’s sharp shooting pulled the Comets to within striking distance the final stanza after they had been trailing by as much as 15 points. Hornberger knocked in four three-pointers in the fourth quarter to get the Comets back in the game, but there wasn’t enough time on the clock to keep the run rolling.
“We picked up our defense, and we actually had a shot to win it, but didn’t make enough plays down the stretch,” said Underwood Head Coach Alex Jangula. “Give Nedrose credit, they hustled and made us play their game.”
The Comets turned things around in the semifinal round, upending Glenburn to advance to the consolation championship game.
A major factor in the uptick in scoring was the Comets’ ability to find the hoop, as they improved to a 35 percent field goal average.
