Wildcats top Comet boys; Cottingham back in lineup

Underwood senior guard Zach Cottingham didn’t know if he would see any playing time last Tuesday night.
The former all-region player hadn’t stepped on the court as a player this season after having knee surgery in early October. He had been told he wouldn’t be playing basketball this season, and it was questionable if he was going to be able to return this spring for baseball and golf. His recuperation time was supposed to be six to nine months. Instead, Cottingham was back on the hard court after 10 weeks, scoring five points in the 73-71 loss to the Wildcats.
Cottingham didn’t hit his average of 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists per game last year, but that wasn’t expected and won’t be expected of him this season as he makes his way back from what should have been a season-ending injury.
“It was just nice to have him on the court,” said Underwood Coach Alex Jangula.
“We realize after ACL surgery he’s probably not going to put up those numbers, but he’s just a good basketball player – he’s a smart player.”
