Aggies stay unbeaten with road win over Ray/Powers Lake
The Velva-Drake/Anamoose-Garrison Aggies remained unbeaten Friday, Sept. 25, defeating Ray/Powers Lake 36-20 on the road in a matchup of Region 3 contenders.
The win moved VDAG to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in region play, giving the Aggies sole possession of first place. Ray/Powers Lake fell to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the region.
Head coach Matt Weidler said the Aggies answered each time the home team threatened to shift the game’s momentum.
“This week was a really good team win,” Weidler said. “Credit them for some of the plays they made, but I thought our kids responded really well after some big plays or scores.”
VDAG’s defense limited the run and pressured the quarterback, Weidler said. Lexton Smith blocked a punt, while Isaiah Hackman intercepted two passes, one near the end of each half.
“We were able to stop the run and our defensive line got after the quarterback,” Weidler said. “We got a huge blocked punt from Lexton Smith, and Isaiah Hackman had two big interceptions at the end of each half.”
The performance followed a pattern Weidler has seen throughout the Aggies’ unbeaten start. He said the defense has tackled well, forced turnovers through interceptions and fumble recoveries, and made opponents rely on their passing games.
