After a loss last week, the Cougars were hungry for a victory at their first home game of the season. Central McLean kicked off and in the first Beach series the Buccaneers came away with nothing because of a strong Cougar defense.
The Cougars’ first series ended the same and, with six minutes left in the first quarter, the game remained scoreless. Senior linebacker Mick Finneman stopped a Buccaneer drive in a tackle for a loss and the Bucs would be forced to punt again. The first quarter ended after numerous turnovers by both teams with the score 0-0.
The Cougars had a string of completed passes from senior quarterback Jordan Sundquist to various receivers. The quarterback hit senior wide receiver Trevor Thomas for a 10-yard gain. On the next down, Sundquist hit tight end sophomore Tucker Fylling in a smooth quick pass. Sundquist had several quarterback keepers during the first half to keep the ball in the Cougar’s hands.
After a pass from Sundquist to senior receiver Ben Duben for a 20-yard gain and one more completed pass to Thomas, senior back Grant Singer rushed for 17 yards and the first Cougar touchdown of the season. The two-point conversion was not completed. The Cougars lead 6-0 at the end of the half but Sundquist would be out for the game with an injury.
