District champions

By STU MERRY

Following this past Saturday’s District 10 championship game – a game that saw the Garrison Troopers defeat the Wilton-Wing Miners 49-46 in overtime – fans scrambled to remember when the last time was that a Trooper team had won a district title. They had to do some deep digging. It’s been a while. The last time was the 1991-92 season. Before that, it was the 89-90 campaign.

For Trooper fans, the drought is over, thanks to some late-game heroics from a group of kids that just don’t know the meaning of quit.

Senior Levi Hummel was one of those leading the charge. He racked up 19 points – 10 in the fourth quarter and overtime. Levi added nine rebounds to go along with five steals and three assists. Dakota Rand played like a man possessed. The junior scored 13 – nine in the pivotal fourth quarter and overtime. But his 25 rebounds were huge. Senior Luke Gehring found twine from beyond the arc in overtime to ignite the Troop and the crowd. Another senior, Tyler Jacobson, had a bucket in the fourth quarter. The four were the only players to score late in the game. Levi and Dakota were the only Troopers in double figures, but this win was a total team effort.
