Girls’ hoops season begins
By STU MERRY

It doesn’t seem possible, but it’s here. The winter sports season is about to begin.
Area and state girls’ basketball teams will begin their season this next week.
Locally, the Garrison Troopers will open Tuesday at Beulah. The Max Cossacks game against Minot Our Redeemers that was scheduled for Tuesday has been moved to Dec. 21 due to scheduling conflicts.
Lewis and Clark North Shore-Plaza starts its season Monday as the Lady Wildcats open as part of the Sawyer Invitational. The tournament continues Tuesday and concludes Dec. 4-5. White Shield opens the season as part of the McLean County Tournament.
Second-year Head Coach Mike Balaban said that practice for the Max Lady Cossacks is going well.
Balaban notes there are 10 girls on the varsity squad this year.
“Each one of them are doing their best to prepare for our season: learning their role and where their individual boundary (skill set) is at the moment,” he noted.
To kick things off, the Cossacks hosted a “Season Beginning Dinner” this past Thursday. Response was, according to Balaban, great as 97 Cossack fans attended. Balaban said the response was appreciated.
Garrison also hosted a “Meet the Troopers” night this past Friday. The event included watching the team in action and a review of rules and sportsmanship.
There are 12 girls on the Troopers’ squad. Coach Sandra Essler said the girls are working hard to be ready for the season opener.
