Royals fall in tight opener, aim to build momentum moving forward

The South Prairie-Max Royals softball team opened its 2026 season with a competitive showing on April 7, falling just short in an 11-9 road loss to Hazen in a game that featured plenty of offense and momentum swings.
Despite the loss, the Royals demonstrated early-season potential, staying within striking distance throughout and putting together a strong offensive effort against a capable Hazen squad.
The two teams traded runs across the contest, with South Prairie-Max continuing to battle back each time Hazen attempted to pull away.
The Royals’ nine runs marked a productive start at the plate, as the lineup showed the ability to generate offense and apply pressure.
Consistent contact and timely hitting kept the game close into the later innings, giving South Prairie-Max a chance to push for a comeback before ultimately coming up just short.
While the offensive output was encouraging, the game also highlighted areas for improvement as the season begins to take shape.
Containing opposing scoring runs and tightening defensive execution will be key focuses moving forward, especially in close games where a few plays can make the difference.
