Spring sports season on hold

Spring sports season on hold
By STU MERRY
Garrison’s sports teams are playing, but it’s not the kind of games that count, or that the teams would like to be playing. Right now the Troopers, like all the other spring sports teams in the state, are playing the waiting game – the waiting game with Mother Nature.
Early April generally means outdoor track meets, baseball games and golf meets. Not this year. Instead, participants are relegated to having to prepare indoors for what is shaping up to be a very short spring sports season.
Golf
The Garrison-Max Trooper golf team began its spring season not in a golf course setting, but rather in a classroom atmosphere.
Coach Loni Hall said she is focusing on the rules and mechanics letting team members watch golf videos.
“It’s hard to keep the kids’ attention for very long so we’ve only been going for 30 to 45 minutes a day,” she said.
Hall confided that plans are to start hitting whiffle balls on the stage this week, enabling team members to “get the kinks out.”
Hall said the hope is to make a trip to Bismarck to hit golf balls in the all seasons dome in the near future.
“The weather is definitely limiting us and will cause us to have a shorter season,” Hall said. With a season being squeezed together into a handful of weeks, Hall said she expects teams will be trying to fit as many meets in at the end of April and beginning of May as possible.
The downside to that, though, is that the athletes will be on the short end of classroom time.
“It will be interesting to see what we can figure out,” she said.
A total of 30 junior and senior high students are out for golf this spring. Max has six boys participating in the program this year. Garrison has 14 boys and 10 girls participating. Assisting Hall will be Mark Harris.
