Titans tumble at sectionals

By STU MERRY

The home field advantage didn’t play into the hands of the Garrison Area Titans American Legion baseball team this past weekend.

Garrison’s Titan Field was host to the Class B West Region Legion Tournament this past week. With the top two teams being able to advance to state from the West Region, it was a pair of teams peaking at the right time that pulled the upset. No. 5 Burlington clipped No. 7 Renville County 6-5 in the championship game.

No. 1 Hazen was sent packing in semi-final play by Renville County, 4-3. The Muskrats relied on a first inning grand slam by Doug Wizenburg to hold up. Riley Brown handcuffed Hazen batters, allowing eight hits and three runs to pick up the win.

The Titans, No. 6, opened on a sour note, falling to No. 3 Surrey 10-4 July 23. Needing a win to stay alive, the boys in blue humbled Stanley 13-8 this past Thursday to set up a game against high-powered Hazen, a team relegated to the loser’s bracket via a 5-3 loss to eventual champion Burlington.
