Troopers fall in opener

By STU MERRY

The Surrey Mustangs played spoiler on their home court this past Saturday, defeating the visiting Garrison Troopers 57-43. It was the first game of the season for both boys teams.

Surrey dominated in three of the four quarter breaks. Coach Jason Mattheis said it was the Mustangs’ 2-3 zone that caused the Troopers fits.

"We haven’t spent much time working against zone defenses and it showed," Mattheis said.

Some good things happened, "but we missed too many easy shots and had too many unforced turnovers," he added.

The boys played pretty well defensively, but couldn’t overcome the turnovers (22 turnovers led to 22 points). Mattheis said it was a good learning experience for the players as many have minimal varsity experience.
