Troopers look back on season

Garrison coach reflections on District 10’s top team

It was a year of ups and downs for the Trooper boys, and one head coach Justin Folk said the team should be proud of.
The Garrison Troopers, who finished first in District 10, ended their season last week at the Region 5 tournament in Bismarck.
After a 64-53 win over New Salem-Almont in February, the Troopers were hopeful for victory when going up against the Holsteins in round one, but it wasn’t a sure bet.
“Although we were the No. 1 seed, this was not a good matchup for us,” Folk said. “We beat them in the regular season but really struggled to do so. ”
Folk said the Holsteins provided a challenge to the Troopers by means of defensive strategies.
“They are so big and physical,” Folk said. “The best way to beat them is to play zone and we have struggled all season defensively when we try to play zone.”
The team had a hard time at the line, missing a total of eight free throws in the fourth quarter and 13 total during the game, a mistake Folk said was hard to overcome in a tournament game.
Still Garrison was able to keep the game close and even set some records for the year.
“We were able to stay in the game long enough to give us a chance to win,” Folk said. “We took care of the ball and had a season low in turnovers for a game.”
