Perennial powerhouse Velva closed out the season for the Garrison-Max Troopers this past Friday night, blitzing the boys in blue 56-0.
The loss handed the Troopers their sixth straight 1-7 season. The last time the Troopers picked up more than one victory was in 2005 when G-M was 3-4.
The coaching staff wished the team would have been at full strength. Instead, it was more like a MASH unit.
“We were without Adam Seidler (knee injury), Cody Lies (knee injury), David Rime (knee injury), Dylan Kinn (broken leg), Reid Groninger (broken hand), Hunter Linz (illness), and Tate Connors on Friday,” bemoaned Coach Jason Mattheis.
All had been consistent starters for the Troopers all season. To make matters worse, the Troop lost Andrew Haugen (concussion) in the second quarter.
In spite of the lopsided loss and playing short-handed, Mattheis thought the team did some nice things considering the situation.
“We ended up with a lot of sophomores on the field, which will only help the team next season,” he said.
