The 5th and 6th grade basketball teams made their season debuts against the visiting teams from Wing-Wilton on April 2. The 5th graders gave up the first point of the game but quickly took the lead for good on their way to a 28-21 win. The 6th graders fell behind early but worked their way back into the game and had a chance to tie late before falling 31-28.
Jitters?
A late start date for practices, Easter break, and the well publicized extra off-day before Easter resulted in only two practices before the game. Those factors plus several rookies playing their first game and it would be easy to imagine nerves could be a problem. But once the players got a bit more comfortable and the adrenaline wore off, they settled into the flow of the game.
One-two punch
The 5th grade unit jumped out to an 8-1 lead after one quarter and extended that lead to 14 after the third period. The lead was cut in half in the 4th quarter but the Troopers maintained control to seal the win. Dawson Wimer and Clay Bendickson, the two veterans on the squad, led the scoring with Wimer dropping in 12 and Bendickson knocking down 10. The defense was solid, making it hard for the opponents to get much going on offense.
