For the second time this month, the Garrison Lady Troopers defeated the New Salem-Almont Holsteins.
This last time, on Monday evening, was doubly important as the winner of the game would move on to the semifinals of the Region 5 Girls Basketball Tournament – one step closer to being the Region 5 champ and thus moving on to state.
The Troopers’ victory against the Holsteins this time around – 58-47 – was more of a closer call than the first time they met on Feb. 8, when the girls from Garrison won 69-17.
"I think we let nerves get to us," said head coach Matt Chase about Monday's game. "You can tell by the pace of the game when New Salem dictated what we were going to do."
Chase gave the Holsteins credit for being prepared for the game.
"We were prepared as well, but we didn't execute when we needed to," he said. "We were lucky to win the game."
The teams tied up early – 2-2 – after the Holsteins’ center Mackenzie Brandt tied up Mia Gehring’s early bucket. That wouldn’t last long as the Troopers took the ball and ran with it. In addition to two of Cedar Perkins’ signature three-point shots, Kaitlyn Zook, Karli Klein and Gehring helped bolster the team’s score up to 16; Brandt also made a three-pointer, but it wasn’t enough to catch up.
