Ziemann qualifies for State Tournament
It was a dreary day at Edgewater Country Club in New Town with temperatures hovering around 60 degrees and a constant threat of rain during the District 6 Regional Girls Golf Tournament.
The Lady Troopers had played the course once before a few weeks ago, so they were familiar with the lay of the land.
Garrison High School’s top contender, Piper Ziemann, pulled into qualifying position early in her round last Monday landing in the top 10.
Although she moved back and forth from 10th, 13th and 7th place , she ultimately finished in 9th place overall out of the 43 golfers competing
She kept her coach, Mark Harris, on edge throughout the back nine - especially on the final hole of the day.
Ziemann, Zaelynn Aune from Stanley, and Cami Knutson from Kenmare/Bowbells were all tied in 10th place going into hole 18.
After Aune and Knutson both took penalty shots following their tee shots, Ziemann needed a bogey to clinch her spot.
On her practice swing, she nicked her ball, and it rolled 15 feet down a small hill still in the long grass on the fringe.
Play was stopped for 25 minutes while officials waited for a decision from the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) on whether the incident would be considered a penalty or counted as a stroke.
The judge ruled it would count as a regular shot – unfortunate but did not cost her a penalty stroke – leaving Ziemann with one fewer stroke to seal the deal.
