$5 million project gets green light

A $5 million fall bond election for remodeling and additions at the elementary and high schools received unanimous board approval at a Garrison School Board meeting Tuesday evening.
The bonds would buy $1,322,600 at the elementary school including four classrooms and improvements to restrooms and $2,827,400 for a commons/dining area, service kitchen and vo-ag addition. If approved by the voters, the elementary school would get 6,600 more square feet and the high school would grow by 14,000 square feet.
“This is what we can get for about $4.2 million, allowing for architectural fees and contingency,” Superintendent Steve Brannan said after reviewing the architect’s preliminary drawings.
Board President Duane Hummel said the plan will have to be defined as clearly as possible before the plan is promoted to the public. He said the public will want to know where each classroom would be located.
“I’m getting some questions on this, so we’ll need to let people know,” Hummel said. “We need to know exactly what we’re getting and I’d like to be able to answer the questions.” Rodger Affeldt agreed that people want to know where the rooms will be located and what the bond election includes.
Brannan said the plan doesn’t allow for everything but meets what the district’s needs are at this time, without exceeding $5 million.
Janis Sloka made a motion to move ahead with a bond election. Karla Scheresky seconded the motion. Board members Lora Wilson, Affeldt, Scheresky, Sloka and Hummel voted in favor. Bonnie Nygard and Chris Seidler were absent.
