A diamond in the rough?

GARRISON – Garrison’s economic development association and community betterment entities joined forces last week for the first time, holding combined annual meetings.
When the two meetings adjourned, those attending were left optimistic that with a little work, the indoor skating rink in northeast Garrison could fill a much-needed void in Garrison.
It’s hoped that building, along with an old church along Trooper Avenue, could accommodate a variety of events and practices.
In the past, the Garrison Area Improvement Association and Better Living for Garrison held separate annual meetings. This year, members thought having a combined gathering would benefit each group.
And by the vibrant discussion that took place, the potential exists that future additional space could be attained.
GAIA focuses on the economic betterment of the immediate area, while Better Living for Garrison targets projects that enhance the quality of life within the community.
One of the biggest concerns the group shared was a lack of floor space for various community activities, including meeting space.
Activities include dance, volleyball, cheering, archery, wrestling, baseball and various levels of basketball. All of which at one time or another, vie for coveted space and time to practice.
The main venues available for activities include Garrison High’s Roy Schei Gym, the Bob Callies Elementary’s Multipurpose Room, the SACA Lodge, and, to a lesser extent, the Garrison City Auditorium.
In attendance was Laura Hellebush, park board president. She said due to a staffing shortage, the board did not offer indoor skating this year, thus, the building sits unused.
