Annual fireworks display suspended

By STU MERRY

There will be no Fourth of July fireworks display at Fort Stevenson State Park this year.

The decision was made in April and announced at that time, but event organizers think a reminder is necessary.

One of the reasons the display is suspended is that it is becoming harder to find enough volunteer firefighters to set off the display. With limited resources, or firefighters, safety is a concern.

Finding volunteers to staff the entrance to the park to request freewill donations is also an annual problem.

July 4 is Monday, a day most people would be returning home from the Fourth of July weekend. Attendance at the display is expected to be down.
