Budds build adult-youth relationships

The Business Budds are at it again.
For the past five years, Business Budds has been a partnership between 6th graders, who are nearly ready to enter the work force, and Garrison business owners and managers.
This month they met to learn about filling out job applications.
Jean Witt, real estate agent at West Inkster Realty, discussed hours of employment and what shifts are.
“Be honest about when you can work because that’s how employers fill their schedule,” Witt said.
The students were definitely concerned with the salary question on the applications.
“That’s what you feel you deserve for pay to work at that business,” she added. “Make sure the salary you are asking for falls into the salary range offered for that position. If the range is $10 to 15, don’t offer them $4 or $8, walk in with confidence,” she said.
McKaila Behles, CVB director, spoke about the importance of good references also.
“Always ask the person you are putting down as a reference (if it’s OK to use them), call them up and let them know,” Behles added. “Don’t put down anyone that’s not going to give good information about you.”
In January the Budds will start teaching the interview process.
“I think Business Budds is a great opportunity for our youth because it helps them get a jump start on their jobs and social skills,” said Sonja Moe of McLean Electric Cooperative.
