Building permit process gets facelift

By STU MERRY

In the wake of some recent abuses of building permits, major changes could be on the horizon.

At their meeting April 7, members of the Garrison City Council heard new guidelines are being proposed. A job description for an ordinance enforcement officer/building inspector is also in the works. The desire is to establish a zoning board of adjustment to hear appeals of ordinances. Mayor Shannon Jeffers and City Attorney Jim Wilson are working on the verbiage.

Jeffers added; "This gives us a chance to be a little more proactive."

Following the meeting, Wilson said; "We’re trying to put a process in place that is efficient and works for both the public and the city. We want to reduce the time it takes to obtain approval of a building project and to appeal any adverse decision regarding a building project such as violations of setback requirement or denial of variances."
